CNC Batch Turning: High-Precision Bushing
High-precision turning on CNC machines: batch manufacturing of cylindrical components from stainless steel with tight tolerances in Dnipro.
Engineering Process & Technical Solutions:
The core engineering challenge of this project was to ensure perfect geometry and surface finish during batch turning of tough AISI 304 stainless steel. It was essential to eliminate chatter, achieve strict concentricity between the inner and outer diameters, and maintain the specified surface roughness without requiring a final grinding operation.
- 1. BLUEPRINT ANALYSIS & CAM PROGRAMMING We performed a meticulous analysis of the part's geometry to optimize the toolpath trajectory. The CNC program was structured to minimize the number of part re-clamping operations, which allowed us to reduce radial and axial runout practically to zero and speed up the cycle time per unit.
- 2. TOOL SELECTION & CUTTING DATA OPTIMIZATION AISI 304 stainless steel is highly prone to work hardening and generates significant heat during cutting. For both roughing and finishing passes, we deployed carbide inserts featuring specialized wear-resistant PVD coating and a sharp chipbreaker geometry. Spindle speeds and feeds were balanced to shear chips smoothly, avoiding built-up edge on the cutting line.
- 3. HIGH-PRECISION INTERNAL BORING The formation of the inner bore was performed using rigid boring bars with minimal overhang. This completely eliminated micro-vibrations (chatter) inside the deep bore, ensuring ideal cylindricity and internal diameter accuracy within the tight limits of the 7th grade ($IT7$).
- 4. ROUGHNESS CONTROL & FINISHING PASS The outer contour and face planes were processed under finishing parameters with high-pressure coolant delivered directly into the cutting zone. This provided effective heat dissipation and enabled us to reach a surface roughness level of $Ra \le 1.6$ $\mu$m, giving the components a flawless, mirror-like commercial appearance.
- 5. BATCH REPEATABILITY & FINAL QUALITY CONTROL (QC) Due to the high rigidity of our CNC turning center and automatic tool wear compensation, the entire batch of bushings features 100% repeatability. Each finished part undergoes instrumental inspection using micrometers and bore gauges to verify compliance with the designated engineering tolerances (up to 0.02 mm).
